The Mind Body Connection

There has always been a natural link between the mind and body. Historically, however, traditional western medicine has largely ignored that connection. Most ailments have been treated based on physical evidence only. Despite this, in recent years, there has been a growing movement which recognizes the mind body connection.

Many conventional thinkers now recognize that treating the body and mind simultaneously is the most effective course of action when treating ailments. There are even those that feel that addressing ones’ emotions is the only true way to eliminate the root cause of disease or dis-ease. Whatever your belief, it is fair to say that mind/body medicine is an ever growing and embraced field.

The mind body connection is evident in many ways. Your mind can affect your body’s response to sickness. A negative outlook on an illness can exacerbate its physical symptoms. However, vice versa, a positive outlook can vitally support the body’s fight against disease. Similarly, a natural positive outlook towards yourself and the world around you can help keep illness at bay. This is why you often hear, “Laughter is the best medicine”. If you change your thoughts, you change your body.

There are those who have worked tirelessly to teach us about the mind body connection for many years. For example, almost 20 years ago, Deepak Chopra wrote one of his first books, “Ageless Body, Timeless Mind”. In this book, Dr. Chopra tells us, “in their essential state, our bodies are composed of energy and information, not solid matter”, and that, “this energy and information is an outcropping of infinite fields of energy and information spanning the universe”. He continues to say that, “the mind and body are inseparably one”, and that, “belief, thoughts and emotions create the chemical reaction that upholds life in every cell”.

Isn’t it time that we all start to recognize and understand the mind body connection? In doing so, we can greatly improve the quality of our health and lives.
